Q. Can Nycon be used at one pound per cubic yard of concrete when specifications often require 1.5 pounds of other types of fiber?
Yes, in the case of Nycon-RC and MultiMesh, testing has shown that 1.0 pound/cubic yard meet the performance / acceptance criteria set forth by International Conference of Building Officials, Evaluation Service, (ICBO ES). In the case of a number of polypropylene materials the minimum used is typically 1.5 pounds/cubic yard.

Please Note: ASTM C1116, Section 4.1.3 does not contain any criteria other than stating the material to use must be homopolymer polypropylene or other synthetic fiber with documented performance. There are no specific tests required to establish an optimum dosage level.

In conclusion, ASTM C1116 has no performance or volume requirements for synthetic fibers. Nycon-RC and MultiMesh meet the performance standards set forth by ICBO ES AC 32, Level II, at a rate of one pound per cubic yard, and may be used as an alternative to specifications requiring 1.5 pounds of polypropylene.
