Q. Which AR-glass fibers are recommended for ready-mix
concrete?
The type of AR-glass fiber to be used in ready-mix is determined
by the application. There are two types of AR-glass fibers:
HD (high-dispersion) and HP (high-performance). HD is a very
fine monofilament fiber that adds a large quantity of fibers
to the concrete, approximately 100 million to one pound of
∏‰ long fibers˜ which computes to approximately
1 million strands of HP per pound. HP is a single strand composed
of 100 HD fibers bonded/fused together.
Due
to their high fiber count, HD AR-glass fibers perform very
well as plastic shrinkage reinforcement and as secondary
reinforcement, whereas HP fibers used at higher dosage rates
provide post-first crack reinforcement where sustained loading
after first crack is a consideration (C1609 and C1399 type
applications).
HP AR-glass fibers are an excellent
alternate to steel/synthetic fiber blends and at a measurable
cost savings. Their use in elevated composite deck systems
has great potential particularly in those cases where negative
moment is a factor.
