FAQs

How is the proper quantity of steel fiber for a given set of project parameters determined?
Unlike synthetic fibers where the quantity used per cubic yard is typically based on manufacturer's recommendations; the steel fiber dosage level is derived from engineering calculations. Steel fibers will contribute to the flexural strength of the plain concrete and thus can promote a reduction in the thickness of the slab and/or increase the load carrying capacity. An important difference, when comparing steel and synthetic fibers is the Modulus of Elasticity. The Modulus of Elasticity for steel is 29 million psi, whereas the Modulus of Elasticity for nylon and polypropylene/polyolefin ranges from 400,000 to 500,000 psi.

Nycon has produced a worksheet, which is made available to structural/design engineers for the purpose of furnishing the specific load parameters and soil properties for a given project. Nycon's engineer will take these project data and determine which specific conditions control and come up with options using various dosage levels of steel fiber. These recommendations are based on a computer program that utilizes both Westgaard and Myerhof analysis methods.

Reviewing the Product Profiles for both NyconSF Type I and Type II, one will find the general dosage ranges for a number of applications. As indicated above, Nycon will provide specific recommendations based on data, which is unique to a given project.
