A chemical admixture, CarpenterStone produces a proprietary "green" building material with all the positive attributes of both concrete and wood and without any of their drawbacks. CarpenterStone mortar is mold proof, termite proof, strong but lightweight..... a material that can be formulated to have the PSI of cement, or a quarter of its hardness and density depending on the market application ... a material that can have four times the tensile and flexural strength of concrete, or less, again depending upon the application .... a material that can be cut, trimmed, nailed, screwed, or bonded – just like wood... a material that is UV stable, passes industry standard freeze-thaw tests, is stain resistant, can be formed into virtually any shape, can be impregnated with any color (down to the core) and can be made to look like virtually any building material - whether it be limestone, slate, wood, etc.
On an installed basis, CarpenterStone mortars are not just cost competitive, but also provide builders significant bottom line savings.
Description
CarpenterStone is both a chemical formula and a process by which various lightweight aggregate can be mixed together with cement in a way that creates stronger and more flexible material than ever before created.
The ingredients for a typical CarpenterStone mortar are:
- Cement
- Vermiculite (and other light weight aggregate)
- Water
- Nycon Fibers
- The CarpenterStone admixture
Mortars produced with CarpenterStone have these desirable attributes:
- The material is 45-55% lighter than concrete.
- It has a PSI of approximately 1,700-2,400 lbs.
- It has tensile and flexural strength of 650-850 lbs.
- Fireproof: The material is non-combustible.
- Mold-resistant: CarpenterStone resists mold growth since it has no bio-degradable ingredients and does not retain water.
- CarpenterStone passes standard freeze/thaw tests due to its low thermal expansion co-efficient.
- The material can be cut, drilled, routed, trimmed, nailed, screwed, or bonded like wood.
- The material has high plasticity and is easily molded and formed.
- The material exhibits high readability and readily takes any form or imprint from molds.
- Limitless colorization possibilities: The material can be impregnated with color, painted, or stained. It accepts any colorization, which coupled with its readability, allows it to be made to look like almost any building material, including limestone, slate, wood, etc.
Note: The specific technical data for CarpenterStone varies based upon the specific formula, with the PSI ranging from 900-2,400 and the weight ranging from 45-75% less than concrete. However, all CarpenterStone formulas have the same general qualities, as listed above. Nycon engineers are available to provide application-specific formula design.
Following are some basic comparisons:
| | Regular Cement/Vermiculite | CarpenterStone |
| Mix | 4:1 | 6:1 | 8:1 | 4:1 | 6:1 | 8:1 |
| DryWt Lbs/Cu F | 31-37 | 22-28 | 18-22 | 68-72 | 57-61 | 45-49 |
| Comp Strength (PSI) | 225-325 | 125-225 | 70-125 | 1,800-2,400 | 1,400-1,700 | 900-1,300 |
| R-Value per inch | 1.15 | 1.49 | 1.67 | 1.04 | 1.34 | 1.51 |
| K-Value | 0.79-0.81 | 0.67-0.71 | 0.60-0.65 | 0.87-0.89 | 0.74-0.78 | 0.66-0.72 |
| Fire Rating | Non-combustible | Non-combustible | Non-combustible | Non-combustible | Non-combustible | Non-combustible |
The above values are affected by specific product usage, installation and design nuances, as well as the actual environment. The values shown should be used for comparison purposes only.
Below is a comparison between the tensile and flexural data for standard concrete and that of CarpenterStone mortar reinforced with Nycon fibers:
| | Tensile (MPa) | Flexural (MPa) |
| Standard Concrete | 3.79 | 4.45 |
| CarpenterStone w/Nycon Fiber A | 880 | TBD |
| CarpenterStone w/Nycon Fiber B | 1600 | TBD |
Design Benefits
CarpenterStone appreciably impacts the way architects think and allows them freedom to design with significantly less support considerations due to the lightweight advantage:
- Expands design possibilities due to reduced weight
- Provides ability to cantilever for greater distances
- Simulates almost any texture and/or color
- Attaches to virtually any substrate - use it anywhere
Structural Benefits
- Provides soundproofing
- Provides insulation
- Provides fireproofing
- Cuts infrastructure costs by reducing footings and steel structure
Installation Benefits
CarpenterStone mortars can be poured, sprayed or cast; they can be manufactured by either semi-skilled labor or with highly automated, material-processing and handling equipment; they can be installed by carpenters instead of masons.
- Lower costs - can be installed by carpenters instead of stone masons
- Faster to install - shortens project timeframe and saves on financing costs
- Less heavy equipment
- Lower insurance costs (i.e. workman's compensation)
Compared to Precast Concrete
- Approximately 50-75% lighter weight, depending upon the specific formula utilized
- Lower shipping costs
- Attaches to virtually any substrate - including Gold board, concrete block, wood, and metal
- Tools like wood - can be cut, routed, screwed, etc.
- Easier, faster, and less expensive to install
- Increased tensile and flexural strength
- Simulates almost any texture or surface
Compared to Foam
- Higher quality "look and feel"
- Fireproof
- Mold resistant
- Significantly increased density prevents damage from birds
- Does not need hard coat
- Does not need paint
- Attaches in the same manner as foam
- Cuts as easily as foam
Applications
- Architectural elements and trim:
- Molding - Sills - Banding - Finials -Brackets
- Garden products
- Encapsulated foam-insulated curtain walls
- Modular wall systems and replacement walls
- Infill panels
- Sound barrier walls
- Fencing, siding, panels
- Table and counter tops
- Artwork and picture frames
- Furniture
- Hearths, surrounds and accessories
- Columns and capitals
- Shutters
- Balusters
